Myspace has created its space on Decision 2008, where it is offering two lucky (and apparently competent) citizen journalists to journey to either the Democratic or Republican conventions. Says the page:
MySpace IMPACT, msnbc.com, and NBC News are choosing two citizen journalists to attend the Democratic and Republican conventions. Create a two minute video demonstrating why you are the right person for the gig: Why will you get the scoop no one else can? How are you going to stand out in the crowd?
This is slightly better then Youtube’s sweepstakes, which I wrote about last month. Youtube’s sweepstakes would only send you to the GOP convention, whereas Myspace will send you to either one. Way to go, Myspace.
We live in an age of social networks and social media, and now we’re going to see an election that we’ve never seen before. Already we have Obama Girl and The Straight Talk Express. What else will we get before the election is done? Youtube and Myspace are just the start of what is a new internet battleground for candidates of all types and parties. Paul Glazowsky of Masable commented on this in his post on Youtube in the election:
YouTube has no allegiance to one vantage or another. It’s a sparring ground for all sides. Most importantly, it’s a sparring ground with no concern for the financial details of its users. Have a thick purse? A thin one? It’s all the same. One’s content is judged almost entirely by the size of one’s audience. With a pool of viewers many millions strong stretched across the globe, there seems to be little room left for the old-style tactics of silence, secrecy, and deception.
So far, it seems that the Democrats are still slightly ahead of the GOP in terms of internet usage, but they are catching up. I think we’re in for a really interesting election this time around, where thankfully, the word "Flip-Flop" can go back to being a type of shoe.
