I wanted to continue explaining my problem with “Flipping Blogs,” which Rowse and Garett recommended in their book. While I am all for actually purchasing blogs and/or selling them provided you intend to actually keep the blog, I do not stand for the idea of just buying a blog, fixing it, then reselling it again. Here are my reasons.
1. Flipped blogs get raised in price higher than they ought to.
A blogger who buys a blog, gets it running, then flips it will naturally charge higher for the blog then he/she originally purchased the blog for. This of course means that fewer people who genuinely want to buy the blog to keep will be able to afford it. When the housing market was the crapshoot it was, people would flip houses in neighborhoods to make them more expensive, meaning fewer people could afford them without taking out big loans. Obviously, this wasn’t the only factor in the housing meltdown, but it sure didn’t help, and it won’t help the Blogosphere.
2. It insults the readers of the blog.
Nothing says “I don’t give a crap about you” more then a blog that repeatedly changes hands. While you’re preparing the blog for re-sale, you have readers that you either inherit or gain during the process of your fixing up. Once you sell the blog, readers may feel a bit betrayed from your leave, be it sudden or phased out.
3. Potential for damaging your rep.
Come on, what are you going to look like when you have multitudes of blogs that you just pop in on and then leave in the night? It’ll make you look undedicated to a blog. Yeah, you can say that you’re dedicated to its improvement, but you’re definitely not dedicated to the long-term. Buying a blog is a big thing, and if you just shirk it, it doesn’t look good (Believe me.)
Obviously, If you can’t deal with a blog, or if you want to move to other interests, selling a blog is OK. If you want to try a new blog niche, and it doesn’t work out, it’s ok to sell it as well, but buying a blog with the intent of selling it later just plain sucks. It’s almost as bad as spam blogging.
