For last weekend, I was at UC Berkeley for a speech tournament, and I was judging some of the various tournaments.
Now, for those who’ve never been, there’s a huge bell tower at Cal known as Sather Tower. Sather Tower also has the privledge of being home to a device resembling a piano known as a Carillon. A carillon is musical instrument connected to a series of bells that allows the bells to be played like a piano. In this case, this carillon could play 63 bells.
Now, because I’m a bit weird about this, I noticed that the clock always played exactly 1:29 seconds after the hour on my watch. It was something I kept in mind checking out the tower. When I checked out the carillon’s room, I noticed on top of the thing a small digital egg timer that was set to read the current time.
…Upon further examination, I realized that the clock was exactly 1:29 seconds late in relation to my watch….you realizing something yet?
While you can argue that the egg timer represents the clock face, it still shows that because the carillon players (The bells are played manually for the hour) can’t read the face of the clock, they rely on the egg timer, and hence, that one little egg timer controls all of UC Berkeley’s time.
Why should I care?
Because as a blogger, you are the little thing. But, as insignificant as you look in the blogosphere, it could not run without you. Even your own site, with everything but the content made by WP or whichever blog you use, supplies all the cool graphics….they would be nothing without your writing.
Just remember: You might be small, but you’re not insignificant.
