As you may or may not know, I’ve seen both ends of the media table: From the journalist working for the paper to blogger blogging about the latest GTD concept. But during the long adventure I’ve had, I’ve stumbed across some books that I feel really help writers of all types. Here before you are a few books I particularly feel are great. Best of all, each of these is under $20, for those blogging on the cheap. A direct link to Amazon for each book means we both win.
On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction (On Writing Well)
On Writing Well, by William Zinsser, is an excellent resource for writing, whether for poetry or for news. I actually had a problem with this book, initially, because Zinsser believed that writing just shouldn’t be something you do for fun. Now that I freelance, I understand where the Zinsser man is coming from. His book offers a complete resource of tips on improving your writing skills.
AP Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law)
This was my bible when I worked for my community college paper, and still serves today as an excellent guide to the use of words and phrases in writing articles, as well as tips on avoiding Libel/Slander and other issues concerning Media Law. No blogger should be without this book.
Start & Run A Creative Services Business
A very simple and easy-to-read book with several easy tips on running your new freelancing business, which might include your blogging. It includes tips from designing an online portfolio to handling one’s taxes. Definitely a must-read.
How to Argue & Win Every Time: At Home, At Work, In Court, Everywhere, Everyday
While not a book on blogging, per se, It’s still important to be able to form your arguments. This book teaches you the art of creating the winning argument, from the structure to the truth. Creating an argument serves to be your best bet in being a better blogger, as it makes you look all the more stronger when taking out the greats in the Blogosphere.
A final recommendation would of course be Lorelle VanFossen’s Blogging Tips book, and though it does fit the criteria for this blog entry, it’s in my opinion that I think I’ve raved a little too much about the book to flaunt it as a review. Nevertheless, it is under $20, and it is a good way to get into real blogging. (I’ll have a real review later.)
