One of the most important things you can do to create a brand for your blog. As Anne Zelenka writes: “Whether you are an employee or a freelancer, you need to manage your personal brand.” She cites Tim Carter, a home remodeler who blogs and sells ebooks.
I must agree that a brand really helps in developing your growth as a blogger. But that’s only the start. As Lorelle VanFossen writes in her book, Blogging Tips, What Bloggers Won’t Tell You About Blogging:
Your blog’s identity is represented online by how you blog, what you blog consistently about, and other visible elements. Blog branding is the development of your blog’s online identity into a brand, a consistent online identity.
So to this end, I propose you create what people in the media business call an Elevator Pitch. An Elevator Pitch is basically the summary of your entire idea within 15-30 seconds (The shorter, the better.) It should, according to Victoria Pynchon, “spotlight your uniqueness, focus on benefits and be effortless to deliver. ” Here’s my elevator pitch:
I have a blog concerning Freelancing, Blogging, and how they work together for publicity and Revenue, from an Communication Perspective, which allows me to see how a business communicates to the outside world through its blog.
To create your own elevator pitch, you need to give a long thought to what your blog is all about. If you have trouble, look back and see what you tend to blog about. Then, write a list of each theme or tag you use in each entry, counting each time they appear. After about 15-20 posts, the tags that appear the most are most likely what to consider your blog about.
So let’s say that Robots, Computers, apocalypse and Terminator are your biggest tags. If you write a lot about apocalyptic robotic futures, you would write it as such to make it sound impressive. You don’t write about robots, computers, apocalypses or the Terminator movies. You write about impending future apocalypses, and destruction at the hands of robots! See, amazing what a little bit of work can do.
So what about you? What’s your elevator pitch?
