It ticks me off sometimes that people think that they can make a good deal of money simply by pointing people to their blog, and shouting “Look, Google ads! Clicky!” It just doesn’t work like that.
I tried using blogger traffic sites, and I’ll probably do one again, but one thing I won’t go for is making this one step above a splog. By that, I mean I won’t reduce this blog to simply being an Ad clicking zone. Too many bloggers I see think they can make money.
In fact, I see a particular website on Craigslist that says that they will pay you to blog. I grow more suspicious of these places every time someone parks it on Craigs. They probably don’t pay well, if at all. So yeah, you can make a marginal amount of cash putting ads on your precious blog, but don’t forget the purpose of any blog: To get your opinions out. Your blog is your thoughts on the world, not the way you make money.
There is no point in trying to make your blog your income. Any money you get, if ANY, will barely be able to support you. Blogs, for the most part, will not get you any money. One of the few exceptions to this is one of my reasons for having this blog: To reinforce my freelancing, and to have this site represent my abilities in writing styles.
My blog is my ideas, not my ads. Ads are cool, but it shouldn’t be what blogging is about. Tweaking the motto of Lifehacker a bit: Don’t blog to live: Live to blog! Technorati Tags: blogs, freelancing, income
